Strengthening communities through mental health first aid.
Strengthening communities through mental health first aid.
Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based course sponsored by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. Programs specialize in adults, youth, teens, higher education, rural communities, older adults, veterans, workplace, fire and EMS, public safety, schools, and faith/spiritual communities.
Our Mission
We're a team committed to bridging the gap of the mental health provider shortage by providing tools and trainings to build community awareness and knowledge on how to identify , understand and respond to mental health and substance use crisis.
What is the purpose for a MHSD Collective?
The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Collective of New Orleans is a partnership between the Louisiana Public Health Institute (LPHI), NAMI New Orleans, and the Metropolitan Human Services District (MHSD).
Together, the Collective serves as a recognized provider of Mental Health First Aid training across the Greater New Orleans area. We work with organizations, communities, and individuals to strengthen behavioral health, build community resilience, and support disaster preparedness.
Our approach centers on doing mental health differently—by coordinating equitable community outreach, collaborating across sectors, and increasing access to clear, practical information about mental health risks, warning signs, and local resources throughout Louisiana.
In-person and remote options
The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Collective of New Orleans primarily serves communities across the Greater New Orleans area through in-person Mental Health First Aid trainings.
We recognize, however, that access to mental health education should not be limited by location. To meet the needs of partners and communities beyond the region—or those who prefer a virtual format—we also offer remote training options.
